Probably best known for its effect on women’s sports at the collegiate level, Title IX (P.L. 111-148, 124 Stat. 119) has a more far reaching goal: to eliminate sex discrimination in federally assisted education programs at all levels. In 2002, the legislation was renamed the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act, in honor of the Representative from Hawaii, who worked tirelessly for its passage.
The Department of Education has been publishing information about Title IX on major anniversaries:
- Title IX: 25 Years of Progress (1997)
- “Open to All” Title IX at 30 (2002)
The Office for Civil Rights Reading Room contains links to Title IX regulations, and to documents and publications about Title IX.
The Congressional Research Service has complete several studies of Title IX, including:
- Sex Discrimination in Education: Overview of Title IX (1998)
- Title IX and School District Liability for Student-on-Student Sexual Harassment (1999)
- Title IX and School District Liability for Sexual Harassment by a Teacher (1998)
